ARDA Skills Centre is located in Vientiane, Lao P.D.R. and is a vocational school for young people who come from the countryside of Laos.
ARDA Skills Development Centre began in 2006 as a way to train impoverished rural youth in practical job skills, character development, and an integrated worldview. We believe that our students can change not only their own lives but the nation of Laos, and we are dedicated to providing the tools they will need to do so.
We are a holistic development agency, not a for-profit entity. All income and donations go right back into supporting and further developing the program.
ARDA Skills Development Centre is located in urban Vientiane. Our facilities include classrooms, on-site dormitory housing for men and women students, cooking facilities, common areas for staff and students, administrative offices, and a small machine shop.
A computer lab is under development and a small garden plot is planned for the future. Students can or soon will be able to study electrical engineering, basic handyman skills, gardening, English, housekeeping, cooking, computer skills, basic accounting, and micro-business on site.
Currently there are two education tracks at the SDC.
Track 1 focuses on Electrical Engineering, with the goal of equipping students to work at international standards. Not all students will get jobs as electricians, so students in Track 1 also learn a variety of basic handyman skills as well as English.
Track 2 is a major in Domestic Training. Students learn sanitation, efficient cleaning skills, Western-style cooking, child-care, and English. In the near future we also plan to offer basic computer skills, simple accounting, and micro-business techniques.
All students receive intensive training in character and holistic worldview development. As students – and the nation – make the transition from rural agriculture to urban business, we strive to help them attain both the skills and the character to ensure a successful transition and build a better future for their families and communities.
It currently has a full enrollment of twenty three students in the two courses:
- Domestic Services Course – 9 months duration
- Electrical Engineering Course – 2 years duration
With qualified teaching staff and a fully renovated campus that includes classrooms, accommodation and kitchen, Library and computer lab, the Skills Development Centre is well equipped to give students the practical skills which will transfer into the work place.
