Water and Environmental Studies (WES) Department at the University of Yangon was established to contribute the capacity building of the human resources working in the Myanmar water and environment sectors. The decision to establish the Department came as a result of the immense endowment of Myanmar’s water resources that poses both tremendous opportunity for sustainable and equitable development, as well as a tremendous number of governance challenges and social risks to navigate.
To become a Center of Excellence in Water Studies and a leading scientific and educational resource on various aspects of natural resource and water management in Myanmar, through excellence in research, training, policy analysis and development, linking academia, fields of policy and practice, in active collaboration with relevant partners at home and abroad.
To enhance the knowledge base of environmental and water resource experts and practitioners in Myanmar and thus contribute to: – the promotion of water quality and sustainable use for livelihoods and economic development – the improvement of water safety and security and promotion of responsible water resource management – the evaluation and mitigation of the impacts of climate change on water resources – the use of water as a sustainable energy resource; – the education, training and research within the framework of local and international partnerships.
Bachelor and Postgraduate Diploma in Water Studies Program will be offered in 2020-2021 academic year and Master Program in 2021-2022 academic year.
